Superior orbital fissure

The superior orbital fissure is a foramen in the skull which lies in between the lesser and greater wing of the sphenoid bone. Several important features pass through this, including:

  • Oculomotor nerve- superior and inferior divisions (CN III)
  • Trochlear nerve (CN IV)
  • Ophthalmic nerve- lacrimal, frontal and nasociliary branches (CN V1)
  • Abducens nerve (CN V1)
  • Ophthalmic vein- superior and inferior divisions
  • Sympathetic fibers from cavernous plexus
